Tell us a little about your background/training.

I am of Indian origin, and I was born in Kampala, Uganda, then grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago. I have been married for 26 years and I have two ‘kids’ ages 17 and 20 and a dog named Blue.

I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Illinois with degrees in Economics & Biology. I earned my medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where I also completed my training in Neurology, was Chief Resident, and pursued additional post-doctoral training and certification as a Master Clinical Psychopharmacologist through the Neuroscience Education Institute.

I have over 20 years of clinical experience, including at the Robbins Headache Clinic in Northbrook, IL, and I was later Founder & Medical Director of the North Shore Headache Clinic in Highland Park, IL. I was also the founder of the Zira Mind & Body Center in Glenview IL, where I became known for my revolutionary integrative approach to treating migraine.

Tell us about why you chose neurology and headaches specifically - what interested you most about this field?

During my high school years, my mother suffered from severe migraines. Watching her struggle without any tools motivated me to  learn more about this condition. In my last year of residency, I was fortunate enough to meet a neurologist who specialized in migraine. After sharing my passion for the field, he asked me to join him in practice. We published a review paper on Botulinum Toxin A for headaches in 2002.  I learned how to manage chronic migraines using novel medications, injections such as Botox and Trigger Point injections, along with balancing acute and preventative medications in the safest way possible to achieve optimal outcomes for my patients.

What have been the things you are most proud of in your career?

I have successfully blended western medicine with eastern medicine, which I studied on my own. I am able to pay close attention to stress, mental health and gut function while managing migraine. I believe this wide range of training has allowed me to see patients in a more holistic manner.

I was also on faculty and a speaker for many pharmaceutical companies. In this role I was able to train many providers about how to use medications wisely and help them further understand and appreciate the complexity of the migraine condition. I balanced pharmaceuticals with non-medication options, which can be challenging to do for many.

What have you learned from your patients that has helped you become a better doctor?

Migraine is a complex condition. My patients have taught me to be more compassionate, patient and creative in how I approach care.

What are you most excited about regarding your role at Neura?

I love sharing my knowledge on migraine and how medications and non medication approaches can work well together to truly help many suffering in pain.
