Meet Sam Jones, APRN, FNP-C: Advancing Sleep Health Through Patient-First Care

At Neura Health, we’re committed to delivering accessible, compassionate, and personalized neurological care. We’re excited to introduce Sam Jones, APRN, FNP-C, a sleep medicine nurse practitioner with a strong background in family medicine and a special focus on managing obstructive sleep apnea.

Sam’s patient-first approach emphasizes building trust and understanding each individual’s unique needs, creating a collaborative path toward better sleep and better health.

A Journey from Critical Care to Sleep Medicine

Sam’s path into sleep medicine draws from over 15 years of clinical experience. After earning his Master of Science in Nursing from the University of St. Francis, he practiced in family medicine before transitioning to sleep medicine full-time.

Earlier in his career, Sam worked as a bachelor-prepared nurse in emergency rooms and ICUs for a decade, experiences that taught him the importance of treating each patient as a person, not just a diagnosis. For the past three years, his work has focused exclusively on sleep medicine.

Why Focus on Sleep Apnea?

Sam has a particular interest in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) because of its broad impact on overall health. Drawing on his background in family medicine, he understands how conditions like weight, blood pressure, and diabetes intersect with sleep health.

“Sleep is central to everything,” Sam explains. “When you address sleep apnea effectively, you can improve so many other aspects of a person’s well-being.”

Centering Care Around the Patient

Sam’s philosophy is simple: listen first, then partner with the patient to build a personalized care plan. “I always start by giving patients space to tell their story,” he says. “From there, we develop a path forward together. You can’t have a successful outcome without trust.”

This approach ensures that each patient feels heard, valued, and empowered—especially in a healthcare system where it’s easy to feel overlooked.

From Hospital Insights to Virtual Sleep Care

Having worked in large hospital settings, Sam understands how patients can feel “lost in the system.” Now, through Neura Health’s virtual platform, he’s able to bring a more human-centered approach to care.

“At Neura, we take the time to really get to know our patients,” he shares. “You’re not just a number here. We listen, we adapt, and we walk with you on your health journey.”

Video Transcript:

Hi, my name is Ramon Jones. I go by Sam, which is short for my middle name, Samuel. And I'm one of the nurse practitioner sleep specialists with Neura Health.

What is your clinical and medical background?

My clinical background is I practice in sleep medicine as a nurse practitioner. I'm board certified in family medicine, so I've been a nurse practitioner for eight years now, and I started in family medicine and then really was drawn to the field of sleep. And so my sub-specialty has been exclusively in sleep for the past three years.

And my medical background is that I was a bachelor prepared nurse for 10 years working in emergency room and ICUS in the hospital setting. And then I did my master's degree in the Family Nurse Practitioner program and I'm board certified in family medicine, and like I said, moved into the sleep specialty.

What’s your special interest within your specific field?

It would probably be obstructive sleep apnea simply because my background training is in family medicine, which focuses on the overall health, the well-being, such as weight, blood pressure, diabetes, et cetera. But sleep is integral to that, and obstructive sleep apnea is very much affected by weight and other health factors.

And so being able to integrate my background and then more specifically towards obstructive sleep apnea that's made that probably my preferred condition within the field of sleep.

What’s your approach to treating patients?

I think the most important thing that I really strive for with each patient is to, first and foremost, just allow them to share everything they feel they need to share and to make just a genuine human-to-human connection so that they feel that they've been heard. You know, trust me with their health and their concerns.

I don't think you can have a successful healthcare outcome or relationship unless you've established that trust and that rapport. So I want the patient-centered approach always to start with first and foremost, letting them know that I'll hear them out as long or as little as it takes, and then from there we can begin to build a mutual path forward to managing their concerns.

What is your POV on patient-first care?

The reason patient-first care matters so much to me is that having practiced in the hospital setting for many years and treating many, many patients there, I think at times they often feel lost in the system, if you will. Or many of them can feel just a number in the system. What I've loved being able to implement in my own specific practice, locally in clinic and virtually with Neura Health, is I really want the patient first and foremost to just know that they just for who they are, are valued as a patient. They're not just a number. They're not lost in a big, broad system, where we really get to know them.

We understand their biggest concerns and needs, and that if things change or more needs to be known about what's going on with their life, their entire background, and then of course, specifically with their health issues, we're here to know all that process. That's really where I start, and that's what I believe matters most in patient-first care.
