Tell us a little about your background/training.

I first became interested in neuroscience at a very early age when growing up in Canada. I obtained a bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University, before going to medical school at Jefferson Medical College. Most recently, I completed my neurosurgery residency and epilepsy surgery fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic.

After graduating from the Cleveland Clinic, I moved to University of California, Irvine in Southern California, where I focus on helping patients with a variety of neurological conditions including headache, pain and epilepsy.

What interests you about headaches?

I see the effects of severe neurological disorders every day, not only for my patients directly but also for their families and social circles. It is this deep understanding of the challenges my patients face that pushes me to do everything I can to help. There are certain headache types that can benefit greatly from surgical intervention, and it is incredible to see the benefits that a relatively low risk procedure can provide.

What have been the things you are most proud of in your career?

I have been lucky to have great mentorship throughout my career and I love being able to train and mentor upcoming neurosurgeons and physicians and ‘pay it forward.’ I am proud of the number of residents and fellows I have trained and observing them provide the same level of care that I strive to provide everyday.

What have you learned from your patients that have helped you become a better doctor?

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that pain is a complex disorder that requires open communication, honesty, and feedback between the physician and the patient. Managing chronic conditions such as headache requires the physician and the patient to be a team and only then can great strides be made.

What are you most excited about regarding your role at Neura?

I am so excited to work closely with the team at Neura Health. I am passionate about helping patients at scale and I think that the team at Neura is uniquely situated to provide world-class care to patients with headache and other neurological issues.
