Q: Tell us a little about your background/training. 

A: I grew up in Australia, and attended medical school there, after which I moved to the United States. I completed my Neurology Residency at Beth Israel Medical Center, followed by a Fellowship in Headache Medicine at Roosevelt Hospital (now Mt. Sinai West).

Q: Tell us about why you chose neurology and headache medicine specifically - what interested you most about this field?  

A: I was attracted by the large variety of presentations of neurological conditions, and fascinated by the idea of obtaining a deeper understanding of the complexities of how the brain works. However, while most neurological diseases have a downhill trajectory, headaches medicine is one field where the course of a patient’s disease can be completely turned around from a disabling one to a manageable inconvenience. I love enabling patients to have more pain-free and fulfilling lives in which they feel greater control of their headaches. Being a migraineur myself and coming from a family where migraines and cluster headaches are prevalent, I can certainly relate to my patients on a personal level.

Q: What have been the things you are most proud of in your career?

A: The fact that I still love my job and find it fascinating after 12 years of treating headaches.  The opportunity to teach neurology residents and give them insight into the world of headaches, so they can be better-equipped to help their future patients.  And all the wonderful feedback I’ve received from patients and their families who feel that their lives have been dramatically improved by my care - such as teens who had missed years of school due to chronic headaches, and who then went on to be able to attend college and have fulfilling lives.

Q: What have you learned from your patients that has helped you become a better doctor? 

A: The importance of being a good listener as well as making an effort to relate on a personal level to each patient. Each patient’s story is a mystery to unravel, filled with clues as to what may be driving their headaches.

Q: What are you most excited about regarding your role at Neura?

A: Being able to provide access to care to patients around the country who may not otherwise have access to good care for their headaches; and flexibility to care for my patients and be a good mom in the delicate balancing act of working motherhood!
