Meet Leslie Carroll, NP: Neura Health’s Expert in Stroke Recovery and Patient-Centered Neurology

At Neura Health, we believe exceptional neurological care begins with listening, compassion, and expertise—and that’s exactly what Leslie Carroll, MSN, APRN, FNP-C brings to every patient interaction. With years of experience in stroke recovery, and chronic condition management, Leslie combines advanced clinical knowledge with a warm, patient-first approach to care. Whether you're recovering from a stroke, navigating tremors, or dealing with long-term neurological symptoms, Leslie is here to support your journey with empathy and evidence-based guidance.

From Neuro ICU to Neurology Specialist

Leslie’s career in neurology began in the high-intensity setting of the Neurointensive Care Unit (Neuro ICU), where she worked as a registered nurse caring for patients with critical neurological injuries. That frontline experience deepened her love for neurology and inspired her to pursue her Master of Science in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

After becoming a nurse practitioner, she spent several years treating patients in both inpatient and outpatient neurology settings across Tennessee. Her clinical background spans a wide range of neurological conditions, with particular interest in stroke rehabilitation, concussion and TBI, and tremor.

A Stroke Recovery Expert with a Whole-Patient Approach

Leslie has a deep passion for helping patients recover from stroke—a condition she frequently managed in the Southern U.S., where prevalence remains high. What drew her to this area of neurology is witnessing the transformational progress patients can make, often going from severe disability to independence with the right support.

“I think it's just very interesting from start to finish how the brain can recover and people can heal,” Leslie says. She believes successful stroke recovery involves more than medication—it requires a team approach involving physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and cognitive rehabilitation.

At every stage of treatment, Leslie prioritizes clear communication and patient education. She takes the time to explain the "why" behind treatment plans and values an open, two-way dialogue with patients. Whether discussing medication or addressing a concern from a Google search, she ensures her patients feel heard, informed, and supported.

Building Trust Through Listening

For Leslie, trust is the foundation of effective neurological care. In a healthcare system that often rushes patients through appointments, she believes in slowing down and truly listening. "Patients as a whole just need a listening ear," she shares. "They want to understand why we're doing what we're doing. And once they know that, it builds trust."

Her approach is especially impactful for those living with chronic neurological conditions, where continuity of care and emotional support are key to managing symptoms long-term.

Advocacy for Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care

Outside of her clinical work, Leslie is an advocate for patients and families facing Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. As an active member of the Alzheimer’s Association, she works to raise awareness and provide education in her community.

She emphasizes that dementia support isn’t just for the patient—it’s also for caregivers and families, helping them understand what to expect and how to navigate care at home.

Video Transcript:

Hi, I'm Leslie Carroll, one of the General Neurology Nurse Practitioners here at Neura, and I live in Tennessee.

What first brought you to medicine?

I was a nurse in the Neurointensive Care Unit for several years before going back to school and getting my master's as a family nurse practitioner, and then I worked inpatient and outpatient for a general neurology group here in Tennessee for five years, and then came to Neura. I love neurology, everything about it.

My whole nursing career as an RN and a nurse practitioner has all been in neurology. I kind of specialized a little bit in our stroke care here in Tennessee, and I just love neurology in general.

What’s your special interest within your specific field?

Probably stroke for sure. In the South, we used to see a lot of stroke here at my previous job, and so I kind of had a little niche for that. I think it's just very interesting from start to finish how the brain can recover and people can heal and you'd see someone in the hospital with debilitating symptoms and then you would see him in your office three months later and just how much that they can improve with physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, cognitive rehab, and just the whole start to finish from prevention, secondary prevention therefore out is just unique.

What’s your approach to treating patients?

Patients as a whole just need a listening ear. I think a lot of times doctors and practitioners are just in such a hurry because a lot of health administrations want us to see a lot more volume and so that we can't take the time to really listen to patients and hear their story and hear their concerns, and then tell them why we're doing what we're doing and explain why the treatment options are what they are or not or what our next steps are in treatment, and I think it's just a lot of listening and then explaining to patients the why. It's like, this is what we're doing, this is why we're doing it, and then if a patient's like, hey, I googled this and I think this, then say, this is why I don't think that. That to me is what patients just want to know, is the why we're doing what we're doing.

What is your POV on patient-first care?

I think patient-first care matters the most because it establishes a trust between you and the patient. If they don't feel comfortable with you or they don't feel like they can tell you their concerns or express their feelings, I think that that automatically kind of puts a patient just a little standoff. And so I think that that's just what is important to get established, that relationship between you and the patient, just first and foremost.

Do you have a chronic condition, or does someone close to you have a chronic condition?

I personally do not have a chronic condition, but over the years, treating people who do have chronic conditions, I've really understood how important it is to listen to them and go over their concerns, and just being a listening ear for them, a lot of times, is what they need.

I am a member of the Alzheimer's Association and play a big part in that here in my community. The Alzheimer's and Dementia Association is so important because it really helps families and caretakers understand why their loved one is going through what they're going through, and it just gives them a lot of support as well because it's also support for the caretaker, the family and the patient and just kind of knowing why they're going through what they're going through and what the steps are as far as what they need in the home or what kind of support they need. It's an advocacy group here that's near and dear to my heart.
