Meet Dr. Randall Berliner, Medical Advisor at Neura Health

Tell us a little about your background/training.

I am a NYC-based neurologist and psychiatrist and also board certified in headache medicine. I started my career in the Montefiore Headache Unit, before deciding to enter private practice in 1999.  I am currently Asst. Professor of Neurology, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and a Fellow of the American Headache Society.

Tell us about why you chose neurology specifically - what interested you most about this field?

I am particularly fascinated by the brain.  It is the most complex of the organs in the human body, and represents an impossibly intricate and seemingly unknowable network that comes together to make us who we are.

What is especially fascinating about headache disorders to you, how did you pick that subspecialty?

Headache is a branch of neurology that integrates my interest in psychiatry and neurology, as many patients with headache disorders also have psychiatric disorders, such as depression and anxiety, and the conditions often interact with each other.  Beyond that, I like that I feel that I can make a profound difference in the life of a headache sufferer.  For example, chronic migraine is said to be as disabling as quadriplegia in many cases, yet, with proper treatment, I can give my patients back their lives.  My patients are often young with their whole lives ahead of them and I can relieve their suffering and make them functional again.  I find that very rewarding.

What have been the things you are most proud of in your career?

My longstanding relationships with patients have been a source of pride for me.  I have patients that have seen me for over 20 years.

What have you learned from your patients that have helped you become a better doctor?

They have taught me to be empathic and to be a better listener.

What are you most excited about regarding your role at Neura?

I am particularly excited about the opportunity to bring specialized headache care to a larger segment of the population.
