Transcript:

Hi, my name is Dr. Abhi Kapuria. I'm a neurologist and I treat a wide variety of diseases. I have additional training in clinical neurophysiology and epilepsy, but I spend a lot of my day treating stroke, dementia, autoimmune diseases, and undiagnosed neurological conditions that are yet to be figured out.

What is your professional background?

My interest in the brain and brain health started at WashU, where I majored in neuroscience. Then I went on to medical school at Emory and then continued my internship, residency, and fellowship at Duke. What pulled me in was watching my own grandfather lose himself to a stroke. Medicine felt like the only honest response to that kind of helplessness.

How do you define empathy and compassion in healthcare?

Well, empathy, I think, is sitting in the discomfort of someone else's experience without trying to fix it in the first five minutes. Compassion is what you do after. I became this kind of provider because early in training, I watched patients get dismissed and I saw how much damage that did. I decided I'd rather run late than make someone else feel unheard.

What is your special interest within your specific field?

I have several special interests. I do work with epilepsy patients, stroke patients, autoimmune diseases, and traumatic brain injury. I consider myself a bit of a generalist at this point, but all patients have really important concerns that deserve attention.

What is your approach to treating patients?

I think patients need to be believed and heard. That's the first appointment, really. After that, we build a plan together. I explain what I think is happening, why, and what the options are. Patients don't need a lecture. They need a partner.
